Improvements in the Definitive EditionĪge of Empires 3 was released all the way back in 2009 so the game has seen quite a bit of age. The goal is to lead your empire to victory and defend your territory against the surrounding nations. For those who don’t know, Age of Empires 3 is a military-fantasy-rpg game that takes place during the Age of Sail during the early 1800s. These classics are now ten years old and with Age of Empires 4 recently being announced we are thankful to Ensemble Studios for coming up with a definitive edition that refreshes our memories of the previous two titles in the series. When the game first launched in 2002, it was a complete different beast from what would eventually become Age of Empires. The definitive edition is still different from the previous installments in the series but we think the updated graphics and gameplay will win over new players. A release is due later this year.Age of Empires 3 was always the ugly duckling of the series but we applaud Ensemble Studios for trying something different. Last year Microsoft announced that a new free-to-play reboot is under development at Robot Entertainment. The Age of Empires franchise lives on though. Shelley now works for Farmville developer Zynga. Bombarding players with shiny baubles and inconsequential gifts can't hide that."įollowing a couple of expansions for the game, Ensemble Studios went on to make Halo Wars for Xbox 360, before disbanding in 2009.

The studio even asked Microsoft to take the Age of Empires brand off the game prior to its release back in 2005 but the publisher refused.Įurogamer awarded the finished product 7/10, insisting, "Even with the new home cities, gameplay feels tired and characterless. "It was like being a child changing all of the dials on a television and then trying to get that picture back.

Shelley added that late on in development Ensemble tried to backtrack and restore the series' traditional gameplay template. "We wanted to create something that was 30 per cent the same, 30 per cent borrowed and 30 per cent innovative. "With Age of Empires 3 we tried all of these new ideas," he said. In an interview with Kotaku, Bruce Shelley, founder of series creator Ensemble Studios, explained that the developer had tried too hard to reinvent the series and broken the game in the process.

The third entry in Microsoft's PC strategy series was "a huge mistake", according to a key member of the development team.
